There are many fun activities planned and we will be going over animals/pets that the students have previously learned in order to review, as well as throw in some new vocabulary and ideas all about pets!

We are starting "Show and Tell" every day this week and it would be great if your children could bring in any of their favorite stuffed animals and/or pictures of any of your pets at home or pets they would like to have!

Monday, OCT. 6: We are going to keep working on mastering last week's animals expressively mixed in with new animals that are pets for vocabulary. Throughout this theme, we will be reviewing animals that CANNOT be pets, but I think it is important to reach a level of mastery with these animals, so we will use this as a way to practice "not/cannot" for exposure to the negative syntactic element. For example, after explaining that a "pet" is something we have at home, I will ask, "Can you have an elephant at home for a pet?" and exaggerate why some animals cannot be pets. The children will practice, "An elephant is not a pet". We will play some games in which I will hide the different animals around the classroom and we will ask, "Where's the _____?" and the children will go on a scavenger hunt to find each pet. We will also be swapping our pet pictures or objects in for our game: "Who is at the door?" with knocking and asking each other "who" (or what animal) it might be.

Tuesday: Today we are going to be focusing on BIG vs. little with all of our pets when we look at many different pictures of animals in which the children will match which two (big and little) animals go together and then receptively and expressively point out the BIG and little animals using the names ("I want the BIG monkey"). This will also be continued practice with the "wh-" question, "Where?"

Wednesday: Today we will be working on drawing our favorite animals with fingerpaint on the tables and also on paper. This will help with the expressive use of the pet names and we will go over the sounds they make. I will also show them the pictures of the animals so they will have an idea of how they want their animals to look. This should be fun and of course the kids will love to sing the "Clean Up!" song when we are all done and can work together to wash the table and get clean hands.

Thursday: Today we will make paper bag puppet pets together in an effort to talk about our favorite animals and go over their body parts that we will cut out to glue on the puppets. We will have fun with these pets throughout the day and maybe their "pets" can help them work on some of their speech goals during "Speech" time!

Friday: We will be working on our "who" structure again today to reinforce what the children learned at the beginning of the week. We will play a new game in which the children will tell me which sounds the pets make and then I will show them a picture of the pet they are supposed to be and then have them act out (making sounds, movements, etc.) like the animal for the other children to ask, "Who are you?". After some guessing, we will find out which animal the child was and then take turns with all of the animals. We will also play the "who" game at the door as well.

Monday, OCT. 13: We will be kicking off this three-day week by going over our animals/pets from last week and adding in a few more! We will pretend our animals are sick and have to go to the vet. The kids will love pretending to be veterinarians and helping their new animal friends feel better!

Tuesday: We are going to "feed" our animals today and take care of them. This will include working on the N-V-N language structure so the children can practice saying, "The mouse eats the cheese" or "The cat drinks the milk". We will be doing receptive and expressive practice of these structures and we will even have special bowls that we will decorate for the animals to eat their treats.

Wednesday: Today we will be working on all of the structures we have been going over for the past week and a half and include some of the games that the children really liked, as well as incorporating more practice with difficult structures. We will have a "Parade of Pets" in my room in which the children will take all of the animals we have talked about and walk them around and dance to music as a celebration of learning so much about pets. We will also be sorting different animals and mastering the expressive vocabulary of the weeks.

VOCAB Wk 1: Structures with "where" and "who", big, little, pet, animal, dog, cat, duck, bear, bird, cow, frog, elephant, fish

VOCAB Wk 2: Continue from Wk 1 and add: horse, monkey, bunny, lion, pig, turtle, snake

Thank you!
Sarah

Peek of the Week Sept. 29-Oct. 3

Hello and welcome to my new Northern Voices blog!

“Peek of the Week” September 29-October 3

Hello! I will be placing a “Peek of the Week” in your child’s bin this week to let you see a snapshot of what we will be doing and the vocabulary we will be working on. We are also moving into the future by changing our “Peek of the Week” updates to our online blogs after this week. According to our records, all of you indicated that internet access was available and I will include pictures on my blog of the vocabulary words if you want to do more practice at home! To find this online, just go to our new Northern Voices website at: http://northernvoices.org/ and click on “About Us”, “Staff”, and then on my name, Sarah Knoll, and it will direct you to my link! I will be putting this “Peek of the Week” up and let me know if you have any problem finding it!

This week at Northern Voices, the theme is “Friends and Family”. We will be working on different activities and language structures with your child related to this theme, as well as pushing for mastery of additional receptive and expressive vocabulary words.

Monday: We are really going to be working on knowing our friends’ and teachers’ names in our classroom and a lot of the social interactions such as saying to our friends, “Good job!” or “Hold my hand” when we walk in the hallway. We will read a book about how to be a good friend and practice some of the ways we can be nice to our classmates. We will also work on having Mommy, Daddy, and Baby sleep on the bed or sit down at the table. This will be in receptive and expressive forms.

Tuesday: We will be working on the “who” question structure today with a house and the children’s pictures in which I will be working on a song, “Who’s in the house?” and knocking on the door to see “who” will be at the door! This should be fun and I really want to encourage the students to ask each other “who” is in the house while taking turns. We will also look at the other pictures of the students who are not in the house and practice, “child is NOT in the house”. We will also be comparing BIG and little apples vs. bananas and BIG airplanes and little airplanes receptively and expressively.

Wednesday: “Where” game with different magnetic books in which the children will be able to manipulate Mommy, Daddy, baby, boy, girl, dog, and a cat in a house, on a chair, and outside. We will be working on practicing how to ask each other “Where’s the baby?” and then throw some prepositions in for the other child to answer, “The baby is on the chair/in the house/etc.” We will also be doing verb cards in which the children will be expected to listen to my directions of one of the following: “jump, turn around, run, walk, fall down” and then be able to expressively tell me what the other students do.

Thursday: We will be cutting up apples together in preparation for our field trip the following day and go over “cut”, “apple”, “seeds”, and do silly things like practice, “Do we drink the apple?” “NO!” we “eat the apple” and I will want them to tell me about it. We will also work on another “who” game this afternoon, manipulating different people doing different actions.

Friday: We will be going on our exciting (rescheduled from last week) field trip to Dodge Nature Center in the morning (please say there will be sunshine!) and the children will be able to see all of the apple orchards and go on a hay ride! This should be a lot of fun. In the afternoon, we will wrap up going over our house game, practice vocabulary and working on individual speech and auditory training targets.

VOCABULARY/Language Structures: (see pictures for most of these below)
Friend

Structures with “where”

Structures with "who"
"Good Job!"

Hearing Aid(s)

Cochlear Implant (Implants)
Jump/Fall Down

Turn Around

Walk/Run
Baby

Mommy/Daddy

Boy/Girl
Bear
Frog
Elephant
Bird
Socks

Pants
Coat
Shoes
Boots

Apples

Seeds
BIG vs. Little

Thanks!

Sarah <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251654170928737938" style="FLOAT: left;
